Apostille Cost by State: Fees, Timing and Countries

State documents get their apostille from the state that issued them, and each state sets its own fee. Pick a state to see the office, fee and turnaround.

Federal documents

Documents signed by a federal official go to the US Department of State, not a state office. The fee is $20.00 per document. Source: Form DS-4194, Request for Authentications Service.

Countries that do not take an apostille

The apostille works among the 129 parties to the Hague Apostille Convention. Elsewhere, a document needs authentication and then legalization by that country's embassy or consulate. Source: HCCH status table, Convention of 5 October 1961. Checked every accession marked as objected to on 2026-11-07: the United States objected only to Liberia and withdrew that on 20 May 2015. Objections between other countries do not affect US documents.
